I wanted to share this with members here as this project is getting closer to an end. I built a wind turbine from scratch, which is capable of generating over 1.5 kw/hr in 25 mph winds. The ac generated is converted to DC and passes through a shunt regulator (sound familiar). From there the power goes through an inverter that matches the load with the power available at a given wind speed. Here is a link to the project. Here is a link to a youtube video showing the turbine spinning near 500 rpm.

Awesome! very neat and professional. Won't the tree's hurt the performance?
I would suggest putting a margin on the left side of your site, it makes reading difficult.

Ideally, I should have no trees, but this is what I have at my home. Even if I cut my own trees, which I won't, there are plenty of trees in the neighborhood. Still, it spins really nicely in the winter when the leaves are gone.

What do you mean by adding a left margin? Can you be more specific with what I should do to make it easier to read? How will a left margin help?

Very nice. I'm considering something a bit smaller to keep a large battery bank topped off in the not-very-sunny climate of NW PA. The lake breeze is almost always present, making wind a very viable option.

I also would need to get some serious altitude to get above the trees. Luckily, I should have a >50' antenna tower available for mounting :)

That's awesome. Did you incorporate some sort of lightning protection? I know the pole is obviously grounded since its in the ground hehe, but is their a possibility of a strike entering the house through power cables? Seems unlikely but since HV is unpredictable you never know.

On the project link, the text is close to the edge, some are cut. Maybe thats just me though.

Tom,

Lightning is always a problem. The tower is grounded by the eight cables. In addition, there is #4 copper wire at the bottom connected to an 8' buried copper grounding rod. If the pulse got through it would probably blow the inverter. I have a surge protector on my Mains for whatever good that will do.

If I know ahead of time that a lightning storm is coming I will just lower the tower. I've heard various suggestions. The trees are the tallest so they should get struck first. Some have suggested putting up a lightning rod, but this could actually draw the lightning to my property when it otherwise would strike a tree.

I'm open to suggestions for better lightning protection.

Don't count on those trees acting as lightning rods. I have a 16' vertical antenna in my back yard that is insulated from ground by a 2' fiberglass base. The antenna has been struck by lightning twice, while the 60' trees surrounding it on all sides (within 50 feet) have only taken 2 themselves.

Murphy adores a challenge like that....

The trees have much more resistance and probably look much shorter electrically. The difference in height probably makes a lot less difference compared to the conductivity. If that isn't obvious.
