So I recently acquired a load of electrolytic caps similar to one I've used in my coilgun, however I'm wondering how well they'll be suited for a pulse discharge through a low-resistance, low-impedence load such as a can-crushing work coil, wire (for wire exploding), etc?
I have a really beefy SCR already and most of the mount, but the real question is whether the caps will withstand the abuse?

They would probably work if the load was a solely resistive one, like exploding fruits and the like, but unfortunately the loads we usually like to mess around with are very inductive. This is bad for electrolytic capacitors because they cannot tolerate any voltage reversal.
Wire exploding will probably work, but a can crusher is almost definitely out of the question.

What if I used a gigantic diode in-line with the cap bank (is there anythign that will even take that much peak current?), along with a free-wheeling diode?
I remember Sam Barros did a electrolytic+scr puck can crusher.... wonder what happened to his.
