Hi all. Just scored 24 SMD 4mm*4mm LED's on Ebay, ridiculously cheap. For the pair of strips + two drivers worked out less than $40, inc postage.
They have separate anodes and cathodes so the drive circuit can be simplified (as well as a 10F200 being soldered straight on the back in theory) To remove them you just peel off the silicone, and then hold one side of strip carefully in a pair of hemostats etc and desolder one side, then repeat for the other. #include "safety_goggles.h"
The driver circuit looks like a PIC uC, possibly a 12C series but is encased in hotmelt. It could be that they programmed it somehow via the output pins (there is a trick using one diode and a resistor) so it could be reprogrammed by overwriting the existing program code with NOP's and subbing your own.
