Does anybody know if there is a way to get 24VDC@5A from a regular computer PSU? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Short of completely opening it up and fiddling with the pins on the TL494 to change the PWM, I'd just get 2 cheap PSU's and series the 0-12V segments, because the -12V rail has only tens or hundreds of mA, while the +12V rail always has 10's of amps.

Keep in mind that computer PSU's have short circuit protection, if you apply a low-resistance load too quickly it might decide that its a short and simply shut down gracefully (ie: without asplosions).

so what you are saying is that i should get two cheap power supplies and series two of the 4pin molex's to get 24VDC? that makes sense, but how do i make sure i dont pull any more than 5A?

Well what you'd want to do is mod the PSU so you have binding posts instead of the 24 pin connector so you can just plug everything together with jumpers.

As for current limiting, you can use mosfets to do a current limited power supply.

Adding them in series doesn't work, I tried, It just short circuits the powersupplies...

thats a good point, just putting any copper on the pins would short circuit the psu...do you have any other ideas then?

Boost converter? If you dont want to make one Im sure you could buy a good 12v to 24v 5amp one for fairly cheap

If there is a common ground there will be a short circuit since the ground level on one PSU will end up at 12V.
