Well that sucks because the only optoisolator that I can find that has nS rise time cost $5 each and I would need 6 of them, so they might end up being the most expensive part of my project! Are you saying to use transistors to trigger the optoisolator?

Yeah optoisolators are expensive.  Usually you have to use transistors cause the photodiode does not allow for much current normally.

Optos are extremely cheap if you look in the right place.  Here's a site where you can get 10 for $2.20
