rp181 said in another post that optical switching was simple. Not simple enough im afraid since i havent got the slightest idea how the different components he mentioned works,or what they do... (these are the components he mentioned: "LM339 IC, 2 resistors, and the photodetectors") ...except for the resistors maybe :)
Could someone mybe explain what they do or how they are used? And maybe even how to put them together to form this nice little optical trigger?

sorry i didnt get the stuff of on my site, the server went down and i burned a couple of IC's due to bad insulation on a jumper. LM339 is a comparator. It takes two voltages and "compares" them. Depending on this, the output goes high or low. Photodetectors vary there resistance based on the amount of light. ile get it up tomorrow

About how fast can this work upto? Because I was originally going to use a microprocesor but I think it might be easier to go with this, I expect it the round to be going faster than about 50m/s

Thanks once again.
El_Roberto to somewhat answer your question killah573 wrote this in another thread ( )
"Like rp181 said, you should use a phototransistor (or a photodiode). A photocell is simply too slow, especially when you build higher power, higher speed coilguns. A phototransistor should be fast enough for most applications, but the fastest coilguns will need the even-faster photodiode."

Here, look at the "4 detector circuit". This is the basic thing. The one im doing uses additional IC's, as i wanted to have a programmable delay for fine tuning.

ive been looking around for suitable diodes and comparators. Would there be any important differences between a DIL and a SO comparator? Guess these things mean something to someone with a bit of kowledge about this sort of things...
