I am trying to enter my VTTC in my local science fair and I looked at the regulations. I have to use UL rated cords place the ENTIRE tesla coil in a metal grounded box, shield the tube with lead, thermally insulate the breakout, and rewind the coil with at least 50,000 volt rated wire. The regulations are here http://www.gsdsef.org/2009/rules%20and%20regs%20-%202009.pdf. Is there anyway I can avoid these ridiculous regulations? Thanks

Couldn't you explain to them that puting the coil in a Faraday cage would be sufficient? Also that there isn't 50kV for every turn so the insulation would see less than that voltage? I can understand them wanting you to shield the tube with lead because they fear x-rays. I don't know how you would get around that one...
EDIT: You can use a Faraday cage as far as I can tell. They also said sufficient insulation so you should be fine. If the discharge point is inside the cage then it is insulated by air I guess.

50Kv wire because of accidental contact "Wiring must be properly insulated." My experiment consists of lighting up florescent bulbs without wires so I cant use a faraday cage.
