I have heard that if you run several (hv) dozen kJ through a small piece of aluminum inside a potatoe cannon (Minus propellant) that it will launch the spud. I have a 45uF 35kV bank and may want to try this.

Yes It probably would launch it but I doubt it would launch it very well, I think with that bank you would be better off making something like a railgun.

such propulsion has been discussed her, and the results are impressive, but not spud gun impressive... they are called ElectroThermal Guns... (currently I am at a loss of which thread had the actual details of one, but I am sure you can find it easily)

That ETG is amazing. I think what DaJJHman meant by "not that impressive" is that it is being compared to launching potatoes for hundreds of yards or through cinder blocks using only some pvc pipe, hair spray , and a grill lighter.

ETG's are quite good, effeciancies of 50% can easily be reached. ETC (electrothermal chemical) increase power alot. ETC's use a explosive instead of metal powder. On that forum i posted a link to, a person is making a ETC using Acetone peroxide as the propellant. High speeds are expected because the shock wave will serve to push the projectile more than the pressure.
