unlatching an IGBT

If an IGBT is latched such that the gate has no control on the current through the CE, how does one fix this, or is the chip destroyed?

I have never heard of IGBT latching. I think you have damaged it.


EDIT: It is possible the gate got charged up and turned the transistor on, without any external components. Short the gate to the source and see if the problem persists.

Is there a signal going to the base? The oscillator might have locked up or died. Just a guess.

If there is a signal going to the base then I think the IGBT is dead. frown

If it doesn't work after turning the power off and back on again (which would unlatch any parasitic SCR) it's an ex-parrot. Dead. Wouldn't voom if you put a million volts through it, etc.

hmm.. yeah. i have seen partial recovery on dead LED's before by overvoltaging them for a microsecond, but this just blasts away the short on the GaN junction (similar sort of idea to zapping Nicads) so it will work if you feed it 150mA but will never be the same :(

Unless this is really old IGBT technology, id say its most likely that you just blew the thing up, not from parasitic latch-up. I think all newer IGBTs have basically suppressed this problem.

Latch up occurs when the Vce of the device exceeds a threshold (caused by lotsa current) to turn on the "parasitic SCR" thingy, basically its a positive feedback network that keeps the IGBT channel conducting even after removing gate voltage. The condition only lasts provided there is current flowing through the IGBT channel, otherwise it just turns off, like an SCR would.
