I found this cap at work. I'm looking for a spark gap tank cap. It will be a pole pig system using approximately 10kva. Do you think this cap is suitable? The only info I have on it is that it measures 100nf. I assume it must be pretty high voltage considering the size of the insulators. Can you guys help me?

Edit: It weighs 14 lbs. There are no markings on whatsoever.

Do you think its a filter cap or a pulse discharge. I'm guessing pulse.

It might be power factor correction capacitor from high voltage distribution line.

in which case it is useless for TC.

From the bushings its made for a pretty high voltage, so we could ask, would anyone PFC with 100nF at that high voltages?

For the size of the rods, it could be pulse, but is there anything else than to try?

It's too small to be a PFC. They're typically about the size and shape of jerry cans.

If it were me, I'd hook it up to my TC and try it. From a safe distance suprised

just keep run times short and check if there is any sign of heating

I've seen a few of these capacitors... I believe if you check the bottom of the can you will likely see a serial number or a stamp. I've seem similar caps being pulled Chinese made - laser and high voltage high current discharge scientific equipment. Most of these caps ran 25 -30 kV DC range -

A guess - sorry if it doesn't help to much.

I know this may not be much help, but if running at 14.4kv with a pig, that is 10.368 Joules per bang if the cap has long enough to charge to full voltage. Does it look like it could take that at 120 or 240bps? I don't know, just saying so that maybe someone with more experience with capacitors can figure something out :P.

Judging by those rods, it just might be pulse. If it is pulse, that is one nice cap!

I wouldn't push that cap over 10KVAC let alone over 1KVA. I think that guy is gonna fail spectacularly.
It may be a pulse cap, but without specs. you're playing at your own risk.

Very valid point. I say put it in something to contain any explosion that may take place, or just make a wall with bricks. If it explodes, you sure don't want to be in the way of it!
