hey guys.
i was hoping you could tell me where on This (the usual single-transistor-driver) flyback driver i would connect a capacitor to charge it with the HV output.

tonight me and some of my friends are attempting to make a small flyback driven tesla-coil :D

thanks.

Yes, you can but the sparks will be very small, and you will likely not get any streamers. The cap needs to be around 20-30kv i guess and a few 100 picofarads.

The flyback, however, has to be dc. You can actually get pretty good sparks with a bigger driver, like the ZVS or a halfbridge, and even the 555 driver will get you some ok sparks, but you may get more voltage from the flyback than the tesla coil depending on the power you run it at.

I have made arcs of over 300mm/1ft using a 1.4 watt flyback powering a spark gap TC.
The thing is the repetition rate was very low (about 1 bang/second)
Very roughly, the length of a TC arc is propotional sqrt(energy)
so a low power flyback can slowly charge quite a large (e.g. 1 to 10 nF) primary capacitor
if you don't mind a very low repetition rate.
