my teacher is requireing us to use a single 9v batter to charge our coilgun. Is there anything i can do to speed up the charge times. Can i use like a car batter, just during testing, and will it bee quicker, or will it fry the disposable camera transformer?

The 12V car battery may not fry the transformer, but it will fry the transistor. I connected a 12V 1500mA wall-wart to one and I got a pretty flame from the board... I've driven the board to 8V (9.5VA) without blowing anything, but things do get warm.
Build a small CW Multiplier for the HV output from the board. In the projects forum, there is a thread on the camera-flash board tesla coil. That circuit will charge a small cap bank. How big is the cap-bank?

Make a boost converter. They will boost 12 volts up to 600 volts, so a 9 volt battery could do 400 volts. Uzzors' is my favorite, because it is easy to understand and he gave a good explanation.

I agree with Arcstarter's suggestion of building a boost converter, as even the most basic design will usually be able charge a capacitor bank faster than a disposable camera flash circuit.
However...

The theoretical output voltage of a boost converter is infinity, it just depends on how long you let the converter run.
So a comparator is required to keep the converter from overcharging the caps.
