Hello, as man of you know, I need to start makig a new coil. My old one got abuse when istarted using an open coil with no straw in the middle. Due to this, the things I shot sometipes ripped out 3-4 inches from the middle coil. Amazing, it still works.
I decided and already bought 2 spools of 14 guage magnet wire (40ft). It's going to be wrapped so a burgerking straw fits in the middle It will use 400v as it's set voltage.
Question: I thought there was some huge formula to figure this out, but lost it. What's the best coil width and layers to use? 14 guage wrapped around a straw. Guessing that's 8mm or something. How man layers do you guys recommend and at what width?

Yeah maybe, The metal bolt I used was bigger than a straw, It's enough that i can fit my screw driver bits into it. They are about 7mm, They cant fit into a straw, So Must be my bolt was bigger than a straw. But yeah, I may consider a pen, my bolt is going to be too small for the width im going to need.
Know estimated to use?
I got a thousand of these free dentist pens. And my drill bits fit into them easy (on the left Philips )

Coiling this wire is NOT fun!!!!! I didn't think it would be this strong of a wire damn >_>
Well, first hard coil wasnt too bad. Because I had no side blockers, some layers wanted to squish down so SOMETIME ill have to recoil on a rig and vice maybe to assure my coil is F L A T to the sides. Later though :D
Erm, Since you guys never helped me really, i did a 80mm coil on a pen, 5 layers maybe, and well, 100V, bearly shot. 200V, big PFF and spark and smoke, solder connection on the coil well, pow.

The switch isnt the problem. My old 22 gauge 10mm 12 layer coil worked good at 400V. Then I try this big 80mm 5 layers of 14 AWG coil, and well, it sucks. Maybe too wide? No one ever told me >_> if you need stats...
What happen was my solder connection exploded. cuz it wasnt a snap/pop it was a PFF, and I know solder makes that sound. My guess is the coil is too big >_< I hate cutting this wire because once cut, i cant ever extend :(

Its possible that the capacitors are discharging to fast. Your capacitor should discharge in around 5 - 8ms for maximum performance. Any longer and the projectile will experience suck back, any shorter and it won't absorb as much energy.

i found a good way to wing 12AWG wire is to wilnd the first layer, twist it, and push it together, and hold it in that position while you wind the next layer.
