Have you heard about Electrothermal guns? You cant find much about Google from that but Im wondering what is their effiency? At first prototype I will use 300-500J capbank and my goal is get out at least 10Joules...I will be back when I get the parts!:P

check powerlabs.org as the guy there has built one, but this it is not as documented as his other college/sponsored things... but may still be useful, particularly the barrel and ignition information...

The efficiency can in theory be very high because of the high temperatures possible. Link2 How high depends on a lot of factors.

35% seems to be quite easy to reach for much higher energies than you plan to use, so your required 2.5% seems realistic.

they need to be somewhat high voltages to get a consistent spark. You probably won't be able to do this with photoflash or lytics. Best bet is a 5kdv or better maxwell.

everyting is possible =)
my youtube channel : Link2

low voltage is better, more current is important (if u make a discharge through air)

my etgs are hv triggered and are reaching up to 6& effi

(...power lab built a etcg no etg ... =) and a etcg needs high voltage)

and at least a lil pic of a gun im building : Link2

on the page it says the gun was designed for both etg and etcg, unless you think he was wrong, but if for some reason his "goals" section where he says he wanted to build an [etg that is also a etcg] is miswritten then my mistake

Never realized you could make one with such low energy and still have decent efficiency. Is it really as simple as just discharging in a tube? also, when you say hv triggered are you saying you just use a low current hv arc (such as NST or marx/whatnot) and the the arc serves as the conduit for the high current. Pretty ingenious and simple.

I have built a ETG and got some good results using a 28,8Kj (36,5Kj if charged to their surge rating)

I am just wondering one thing, I explode a thin aluminum wire with 150J and the blast is pretty massive...but I tried to shoot projectile with it but projectile didn`t go even trough paper:p
