I'm looking for a first time analog scope, for under AUS$100 on ebay, nothing fancy.

So what are some good brands and models?

My first scope was a 20MHz HP, whose vertical deflection amplifier promptly failed, but while it was working was very good. My second scope was a 20MHz LABTECH, there is a HUNG CHANG lookalike that is exactly the same. My third scope was a 200MHz FLUKE PM3092, which I have been extremely satisfied with.

Personally, I stayed away from anything vintage or the chunky ones with a round display. Beware severely of items with "AS IS" in the description; this is French for "This oscilloscope does not actually work". Don't buy anything that is not clearly in full working order; intermittent or faulty oscilloscopes aren't really fun or easy to fix.

The quality of your oscilloscope is inversely proportional to the frustration you will experience you with electronics, and I don't think you'll find anything worthwhile for < AUD100, but if you're willing to spend a bit more, you can snipe a nice old Tektronix model.

Dick Smith suprisingly offers a very budget concious 10Mhz analog scope:

Its certainly nothing fancy , but may well suit your needs, and its brand new.
Personally , if you are definately hooked on electronics, and its not just a passing phase, I would save up a bit more and try to get a good secondhand Tektronics, keep an eye out for something like a TDS320, they are a great place to start and will give you a lifetime of use, I use one as my main scope and love it , and I did get it on ebay for under $400 !!
But you will have to be patient to get a good bargain, scopes tend to fetch good prices on ebay.
Anyway , best of luck.

Or something like -= Link =- would be great.

But if thats all way out of budget, the DSE option is probably fine, it got a great review in Silicon Chip magazine, cant remember the issue.

I personaly belive if you want a CRO that cheap you would be better off buying the one listed above in dick smith or this one Link2 in Jaycar. it only 50 dollars more and you should get good performance out of it for use in things such as sstc's flyback drivers' and other oscillators, plus if it breaks you can return it, where as if you get some vintage scope off E-bay and it breaks down you would be in a mess.
