For my coilgun im running at 60v 90000uf using thick (16awg) wire. This means there is a lot of current needing to be switched, but not much voltage. I need to find an scr i can use, rated for at least 2000 amps. However, all the ones i find at that rating are around 1600v and cost a lot....does anybody know where i can get a low voltage high current one? (im thinking low voltage = lower cost?)

thanks

matt

that is not going to reach 2kA, use barry's inductor and RLC sim to see the current.

i did, and it reached around 1500A with 4 layers (10ms pulse), and 1000A with 6 layers, but that was a much longer pulse

You can just parallel some lower current rated SCRs.

I havn't seen them below a couple hundred volts in general, maybe it has something to do with their construction?

I'd reccomend paralleling a good 5-8 SCRs each rated for 400A peak 10ms (if your coilgun can indeed reach such insane currents). It always pays to overbuild (a bit at least).

60V and 2kA?? Cap ESR, ESL, coil resistance is going to seriously limit your peak current at that kind of voltage. Doubt you will need anything bigger than a 40A continuous SCR.
