Laser Module

Hi all,

I recently purchesed a 15mw green laser diode/module to make a nice laser pointer. However, i have noticed that when operating, after a few seconds, a tiny little smd ic on the driver board gets rather hot. Is this normal? i dont know anything about laser diode 'driving', so what is this board likely to be doing? The whole thing runs off 3v, and thats what im putting in, so i dont really imagine why it should get hot. Any ideas?

Pretty reasonable, the small IC could either be a transistor or an op amp. The circuit for the driver is most likely a linear driver, so any extra voltage that needs to be dissipated will be heat.

The infrared diode that drives the laser will most likely take in excess of of a hundred mW, so the opamp/transistor will have to dissipate a good bit of power.

Normal, not the best and not for long run time, but indeed its normal.
