My friends and I have been building a, currently, single stage coil gun. It started out shooting staples and nails a few feet and now we shoot a .5" by 2" bolt about 85 ft/sec. We built our own charger which is adjustable and self-regulating. The barrel is currently a PVC pipe with a bit of room between the ID and the projectile so I know we are getting a lot of efficiency loss from that. We plan on using a brass barrel (slotted of course) that has a wall thickness of .029" and the clearance between the ID and the new projectiles is .007" We have two 450V 3300µf capacitors which would mean our efficiency is ~2.6%. If you want to see more, there are pictures, videos and even a schematic here.
