Hello there. First of all i am a newbie (wrt u ppl !) so plz dont insult me if i am wrong. I need a driver that could output the highest voltage keeping the current to the MINIMUM as i dont want to fry my flyback. I think the o/p voltage is a function of the input voltage and the frequency of the ckt. Using a higher input voltage (v>30) will raise the output but i got my LOPT fried several times. With an overpowered 555 or zvs the flyback goes really hot but its the o/p current that gets tremendous and i dont want that. mad
I dont need heavy arcs, just the streamers would do. And i need really long arcs really large voltage... cheesey
Can anybody suggest any modification for ANY driver to suit my need? smile
THANKS IN ADVANCE

Running a ZVS at 5V I was getting some 60mm very thin sparks, but it would also flash over between all the legs on the bottom of the flyback transformer.

Here is the simplest schematic of my quasi-resonant flyback converter/driver:

You can get very high voltages (one transformer I have can start a purple spark at 14cm distance), like this: Link2

Adding a transistor and two resistors (Q1, R5, R6) allows safe limitation of the maximum current. If Q1 is put into conduction, the duty cycle of the 555 is reduced, and the maximum current is limited. With 0.2 Ohm, the limit is at about 5 A. I tested this with the normal input winding of the flyback, but this requires a high-voltage driver transistor (1500 V). With an external winding, less voltage is required, but the current increases.
The drawing is a schematic for simulation with Ltspice.
