I'm wanting to replace my single transistor driven flyback with a different HV generator as I'm a little tired of my transistors frying, the slow charge times and what-not. My capacitor bank is 2200uF at 800v so it would be nice to have around 1000vdc with decent amperage (0.1 - 0.025 amps). But if my numbers are right, taking the 110vac mains and jumping it to those levels would take about 3 stages with caps rated at 25-108uF and 350-400v. Now I have yet to look at diodes yet, but the caps seem to be $1-2 a pop... which may not be that expensive, but I'm used to doing things from salvage. I just want to know if this is a viable method both time and money wise.

Your capacitor values sound good, and the setup will probably work very reliably for capacitor charging.
May I suggest photoflash capacitors for the CW stack? It may be difficult to find matching values, but it can be done for free, and they are almost always 80-160uF and ~330V. For the diodes you can use common 1N4007s or similar, since you will only be using 60Hz.
Just remember to use the highest possible capacitances in the CW stack- this will allow maximum power throughput. Photoflash caps are so common you could probably even use multiple in parallel for each stage.
EDIT: Just realized 330V is slightly too low...wouldn't cost anything to try tho; there's are good chance they'll take the excess voltage. Just remember to to use a fuse and a protective casing!

Thanks for the advice! I was unsure just what kind of stress they would see with my mains as it fluctuates quite violently sometimes and felt it necessary to assume 170v peak, even if its unlikely . I work in Wal-Mart in electronics, right next to the photo dept... maybe i can talk my co-workers into parting with some.

Well, luck would have it that I ended up with two different sized (physical) group of caps that are unmarked. (One of them is green?) Is my only hope to hook the similar ones up and see... or should I get a capacitance meter?
