Well I am planning to build a more powerful coil gun then I made before.

Since PE= (1/2)(C)(V)^2

Would one of my 470uF 200V capacitor store up to 94 joules?

So if I had 10 of those capacitors hooked in parallel, I would get a 940 joule (0.94 KJ) capacitor bank when fully charged?

How powerful would it be able to project a toothpick sized nail at maximum charge?

Hi hydraliskdragon

470uF at 200V is 9.4J. You may want bigger capacitors! If you intend to use a small nail as the projectile then I would recommend no more than 100J per stage.

Eek, miss calculation.

I was wondering why I was getting huge amount of energy for such a small capacitor.

Find the mass of your projectile and see how fast it will move if you manage to put 10% of the capacitor energy into it. (e = 0.5*m*(v^2), solve for v) That is the upper limit of what you can expect if you do everything right.

In reality a fast moving projectile makes it difficult to reach 10% efficiency and you should expect a significantly lower velocity for small projectiles.

keep in mind that the projectile will saturate.

Well, after finding out that my capacitor didn't store enough PE to make any real powerful coil gun.

What would be a good source for salvaging good capacitor with high Farad and Voltage? Excluding computers due to hard to obtain reason's.

Ebay is the typical source. For really big caps I have found some at hamfests as well, not sure if you have anything like that up there.

I have 400V 470uf capacitors. One guy on instructables, used only 1 of these, and a 22 AWG, 12 layer coil 30mm wide, over a straw. It fires a metal 1 inch piece through a coffee can. Claims it has 6% efficiency. Each is .. 36.7 or 37.6 joules. I forgot which one :( If your interested, they still sell them.

I think i got my 1000V 6Amp diodes there too :)

E = 0.5xCxV^2

Thats the formula for finding the energy a capacitor could store. C is capacitance in farads, V is voltage you plan on charging your caps to.
