Does a voltage regulator exist that gives me 5 Volts when provided 6 Volts?
The standard LM7805 I have have a voltage drop of 2 volts so I would at least need 7 volts supply. Are there some with a drop of 1 volt or below?

Yes, there are many, see here as an example: Link2

The drop depends on different factors like current and temperature. If you only need a limited current at a given temperature a 2 V drop worst case regulator may work fine. It should be specified in the datasheet.

Thank you for the quick answer.
The current needed will be quite low (AVR microcontroller). Plus a few LEDs.
In the datasheet it says voltage drop of 2 volts at 1 amp, so at about 100mA it might work?!

That is possible, exactly how much lower the drop will be at 100 mA depends on the design of the regulator. My guess is that it will still be a bit higher than 1 V.

If the design is not critical you might not need a regulator at all, run it at 6 V or one or two diodes in series can be all you need.

switch-mode regulators might be good.

As Bjørn says. Diode voltage drops are your cheapist and easyist route.

thanx!
That works for me.
(since no reference voltage needed for i.e. adc)

Hmm. Well this will work somewhat, the other trick is to use a 78L05 which IIRC works with <1V headroom.
