PWM for simple DAC?

I have an old scope (from the 1960's) that I want to use as a clock or similar entertaining things. For the pattern generator I will use an ATMega 16.
My question is now: Will the PWM output plus a lowpass filter be sufficient?

It will be good enough for some things but we are talking about the kHz range so it is very limited how many points you can draw on each frame. A better choice would be a simple R2R D/A converter.
