I've disassembled several microwaves for parts for several projects (arc welder, coil gun) and I'm left with a bunch of magnetrons sitting around. Any (relatively) safe ideas for something to make with them?

Magnetrons can be used as an energy source for melting and casting furnaces, provided you have a crucible made of an efficient absorber like graphite or silicon carbide. Since a lot of inexpensive standard crucibles are made of graphite bonded silicon carbide, this could be convenient. You just need good thermal insulation and long enough waveguides to direct the microwaves into the heating cavity without melting the magnetron antennae.

The problem is the description of "safe". I have read the info-unlimited magnetron horn project (I wound up with a LOT of magnetrons) and was thinking about a project also. But realistically, there are some problems with any open ended use of a magnetron unless your intention is to make a weapon. Before actual construction, I would have some method of measurement of leakage!( i.e. a MW oven is closed, etc).
Just my opinion but working with a magnetron without some REAL engineering skills and resources is asking for trouble. If you don't have the money to use appropriate materials, it's a serious gamble.

The magnets from inside of the magnetrons are fairly powerful, and making a round jacobs ladder is a fun possibility with them. Infact, using them with a MOT arc would produce a great deal of lorenz force on the arc (relative to a flyback or NST, which work too), considering its carrying half an amp.

Two amps more likely But the mot may need to be rectified, I think the magnet "arc vortex" only works with dc.
