cleaning oxidized copper

has anyone tried to clean oxidized copper with a diluted HCl solution? if so would it not re oxidize when just left alone? this is because my primary is very oxidized and I wanted to clean it.

you can try coating it with a clear enamel but then it would make tapping a problem.

I clean my circuit boards with HCL all the time because it doesn't attack the copper, just the oxide.

After you clean it you could put almost any kind of film on the wire, even a thin film of mineral oil should protect it for a while.

If you have no HCl, I seem to recall that even H2S04 will also work (But don't leave it on too long!), but you will need to rinse with distilled water afterwards. I did wonder if it could be used to strip the ends of enameled wire, much like if one were to spray lacquer around your primary coil.
