Hi all.
Latest project:- use the silver coated pyrolytic graphite levitator I have as a tremor detector. Plan is to have it hooked up via thin wire to a UPS and battery, along with a small mobile SMS sender so I am automatically notified in the event anything interesting happens.
Have seen something similar in EPE, so it shouldn't be too hard- just have the PIC generate the correct sequence of button presses to get the phone out of standby, SMS typed and sent.

I remember that article, it was in Oct 2007 edition of EPE. At the time, I thought 'I might build that thing, but we never get earthquakes in the UK' then a few months later we got the Feb 2008 quake!
If I were doing it with the SMS addition, I would probably use an old Nokia 3210 phone or similar with the serial port. You could hook that to a pic or an AVR, and send SMS via the serial port, just a thought. I used to do this from my PC many years ago.

Cool,might try that.
Additional systems to add;- magnetic field spike (lightning) detector, battery backup etc. Also some phone companies (koff Cable & Witless /koff) helpfully void remaining credit on unused SIM cards after a few months. I'll need to get it to send an automated message every few weeks or so (test message) to prevent this problem.
Might also integrate a weather monitor and solar cell array to keep it charged.
