Hi all.

After having nothing but problems with a small electronics device involving button cells (the damned things just would *not* stay in one place, etc), I had an interesting idea for a button cell power switch.

Find a suitable casing such as an old broken pen, slightly bigger than the cells being used, with a lid.

Cut down to size required, then "bridge" the non-lidded end with a piece of metal with wire attached and a button on the end which can be pushed down.

Under this, put a QTC (quantum tunneling composite) pill, and under this your cell stack. This acts as both a spring to ensure reliable cell contact, and a linear switch.

On the other end put the second power contact, LED, etc for your application, and thread the wire from the top end either through the pen barrel (not as good due to risk of shorts) or round the outside, and screw it closed.

If you push on the top button not only will the LED/etc come on but you can fully adjust the brightness as well, and the switch is much more reliable than anything purely mechanical.

Another idea I had is to use this same technique to make from scratch (£1 "bargain pack cells) 12V lighter-like batteries as these are getting very hard to obtain now for some reason.

Regards, -A
