Hello, I want to make a batterycharger for a array of gel batteries.
The current charger i'm using is pulling to much power from my generator.

So I want to build a new battery charger now and I need ideas for that.

I want to control both current and voltage with a microcontroller. That's because the batteries need a quite advanced charging programme. First stage of the charge it must be current limited, after that voltage limited and after current drop below a certain level a different voltage limit.

So let's sum up the facts:
380Vac 3 phase generator
43.2-56.4V output
40A maximum charging current
Microcontrolled current and voltage

Hope you guys could help me futher :)

You could rectify the 3~ input and convert it to low voltage with a monster smps. Other solution could be a big transformer, which will be expensive unless found from junkyard (welder transformers etc.) or done with MOTs. For variable voltage, a linear regulator could be one, however with high losses.

A smps would be the most efficient option, but you'll need a huge ferrite core for the transformer. But controlling suck monster smps with a micro-controller would be difficult because of the EMI.

The only problem is that it's 13.8 V (500W). He needs an variable smps that's capable of delivering 2.3 KW. He also stated that it should be controlled with a micro processor, so it would need al lot of failsafe protection hardware.

Another topology that might be suitable is a buck-boost converter, but this might be a lot harder to design and build.

I may be getting a 48V 73A smps, tho its not µC controlled. It has 3phase input.

He could buy a 42V 3phase input smps and the use a µC controlled Boost converter to ramp up the voltage to the desired level.

What would be the best way to go if he wants to build a SMPS. A flyback topology with mosfet's or a heavy H-bridge with IGBT's
