Small Study on Disposable Camera Caps

Just thought I should post this. I took a weekend to sort through a ton of used disposable cameras and come up with some hard data about the prevalence of flash capacitor sizes and different models. I know this isn't the world's most important thing but what the heck...

Flash capacitor overall occurence:
Capacitor Size Approximate Occurrence
80uF 20%
100uF 35%
120uF 40%
160uF 5%


Disposable Camera Model Known Capacitor Size(s)
Kodak FunSaver 80, 100, 120, 160
Kodak Powerflash 120, 160
Kodak HQ 80, 100
Kodak Plus Digital 100
Kodak MAX 100
Fujifilm QuickSnap 80, 100
CVS FLASH Camera 80, 100
Free Shot 80
Dakota Freeze Frame 100

Sample size was somewhat over 200.


...Which means the average flash cap would store 107uF at 330VDC.

I don't think I have seen any 160uF caps out of the 60 or so cameras I have taken apart unless the unmarked ones are 160uF... To me it seems like most of the camera caps are 120uF but that's just what I have seen.

Even though it's kinda useless like you said, it's still cool to know. smile

I just checked mine, 8 are 80 uF and 10 are 120uF. No 160/100uF.

Yeah, the 160s are pretty rare. 1 out of 20 on average. You can only find them in Kodak Powerflash and Funsaver models, the majority being in powerflashes. The long thin unmarked caps tend to be 100uF and the short thin ones are 80.

Main reason I did this was to get the 107uF average for roughly predicting the energy of a yet to be built cap-bank.

He is right about the 160s, of 240 or so I've salvaged, I only found 10 or so. I thought the long unmarked ones were 120s, based on some RC time constant experiments I did, though I did find that the short unmarked ones were 80s, based on the same testing.

Heh interesting about the long thn ones. The couple I tested were 100 but I better check now...

EDIT:
Looks to be kindof a mixed bag with some long thin ones at 120 and others at 100.
