Or make that 3.......
Hello, I am using a TC4420 to drive the gate of a IRFP250N.This is pulsed at 4kHz with a on period of 8%.The connection to the gate is made through a 150E resistor for switching on the MOSFET gate, and a 6E / 1N5819 diode for switching off the same. The MOSFET in turn drives a flyback which is used to generate a 5kV DC.The DC is from 2x103 caps , 500k resistor, 103 (x1) cap in a pi configuration. If I draw sparks continuously I find the TC4420 fails and leaves the gate of the MOSFET permanently high. Any clues on how to solve the issue.

so are you only going to use this circuit to drive flybacks if so than there is much easier options without using a gtc like a mazzili or a 555 with Quasi-resonant capacitor. It is possible to tune these to give you 5kv if thats all you need

Hi , That can't be done I am afraid, its all powered from a single battery. Are the spikes only due to sparking ? Do you feel that the oscillator is latching up ? The oscillator is actually a micro which is doing all the other tasks without any problem.

What do you use as pulse source for your gate driver? Anyway, put 0.1uF supply decoupling caps close to all ICs, and maybe even some tantalum caps. Also check that you're not exceeding maximum ratings of the TC driver.
When the driver "fails" is it permanently damaged or not?

Well I will put a 104 across the bulk cap on the supply. Actually I am assuming the input is not latching as the micro is doing the other jobs ( refreshing a muxed seven seg, reading from ADC )etc. When I replace the TC4420 the new one works well for some time.
