Hi all, I tried to get a new Oxygen cylinder for my Bernzomatic MAPP torch today and they wouldn`t sell it to me! Apparently, despite the fact that I have used it without incident for 15 years (!), the government has decided that I can`t be trusted with Oxygen and thus my torch is now useless unless I obtain the necessary certificate (which will cost me time and money if I`m even allowed it at all). Can anyone in the UK tell me when this happened?

All this paranoia and nannying is starting to get on my nerves :o/

edit: Maybe the wrong forum, sorry mods.

Whatttttt! I guess that means my Bernzomatic is useless too?!

Britain is beyond a nanny state, it's a freaking playpen state with only chewable goods allowed. I'd better toss it out and buy a TIG welder before they ban those as well =(

Well, after a bit of Googling I`m confused because I found this email response from Bernzomatic in a forum dated 2005:

`Thank you for your enquiry regarding the Bernzomatic Welding Kit/Oxygen cylinder. Unfortunately, due to changing European Legislation (TPED), our disposable Oxygen cylinders no longer comply and therefore it is not possible for us to import them into the UK.

This legislation only affects the shipping and import. Any cylinders in the market are perfectly safe to buy and use. Our other products (Propane and MAPP) already comply.

There is currently no direct alternative product in the range. However, many light brazing applications can still be achieved with our next hottest torch, the TS539 running on MAPP gas.`

However, a friendly refrigeration guy said he could buy some for me no problem, so what ARE the facts I wonder? I can`t find any online but nothing that says I can`t legally buy it either.

Well yeah, except the Bernzomatic oxygen bottles are a total ripoff. They have something like half an ounce of oxygen in them frown How about something like this:

Link2

WeldUK say you can use it on your Bernzomatic torch. So it looks like oxygen bottles aren't outlawed in general, just Bernzomatic's ones. I don't know if this delivers more oxygen for your buck, but the regulator sure looks better than the touchy thing on the Bernzomatic.

If the oxygen tank is anything like the leaky Bernzomatic propane tank that went up and singed all the hairs off my arm, I'm not surprised they banned them in the EU. suprised

You can always ask the enforcing authority what the issue is.

Yep, the regulator from WeldUK looks like the way to go long term as a bottle lasts me ages anyway. I`ll see if this fridge guy sorts me out first however as he should be getting back to me in a couple of days.
I`m still not clear on why I was fed all that rubbish about it being controlled though as it obviously isn`t.

Anyhow, it`s solved one way or the other so thanks for listening to my little rant :o)
