Ok, this has been bugging me for a bit. I have read from many sources that are laser experts (like Sam's Laser FAQ) that you can "get away with" a long pulse duration of flashlamp illumination "but should be under the fluorescent lifetime of the crystal" say 3ms for Ruby.......
But for YAG, to make it lase you must be down in the microsecond range because YAG has a much shorter fluorescent lifetime than ruby......so YAG takes less energy to get it to lase, but the pulse duration of the flashlamps white light pumping must be much shorter.....
However, in the real world, people are making the SSY-1 YAG laser work with electrolytics....heck even a camera flash circuit with no inductor will make the little SSY-1 work claims one source. And we know they work even when the flahslamp illumination time exceeds the fluorescent lifetime of the YAG rod.....
Then with ruby lasers, they made a Continuos wave one way back using the sun as a pumping source but it was inefficient I read.......ok so here we have a pumping source that clearly completely disregards the fluorescent lifetime of the Ruby!!!
Ok so what exactly is the purpose of have the pumping light source duration time shorter than the fluorescent lifetime of the crystal....? And is it necessary to do so to get the crystal to lase (obviously not!!)

Ruby and yag are two different types of lasers. Ruby can only lase in pulsed mode, due to the way it lases (aparently if you cool it in LN2 you can make it lase CW but that is very uncommon) where yag is capable of lasing CW no problem. Because of this you can have pulse lengths as long as you want with yag (as long as your source is brighter than the threshold value for your resonator) but not with ruby.
