Does anyone know of any places to find capacitors that are ideal in coilguns. Right now I am using some 450V 2400uf (12) that I got for 50$.

Yeah, I have that same set of capacitors, and I believe rp181 does too. They're great for coilguns, and should work nicely with one of those puck SCRs you mentioned.

Auction sites are really your best bet.....though some hole-in-the-wall repair shops can yield the occasional find.

well if your planning to dump all that energy into a single coil dont even bother the effiecency wont ecen by 0.5% how ever if your planning a multi stage coil gun like 3 or 6 stages it would be great. the best capacitors i find to use in coil guns is photo flashe caps they are pulse rated, guaranteed for like 100,000 discharges without losing perfomance, release there energy faster and bascicly have larger power density levels.

I can tell you this form experience i have been testing my coil guns for years now and found they work the best i am now on my way to building a portablu hand held coil gun how ever i wont be using the ones from disposible cameras but im planning on buying some 300uf 450 volt cornell dublier photo falsh caps cheesey

Yes I have been into coilguns for quite some time and I am planning to make a 4 or 5 stage coil gun with those capacitors.

You could just buy a few of these: Link2
Link2
They each hold 300 joules (about) and you can series them up for like 5 of them for charging with an mot ir like 10 of them for an mot and doubler. Then you can just parallel them for even more energy.

Oh yea, sorry rp181. I mixed you up with another member. They are from BCD Parts on Ebay; I don't know if he's still selling them but I do remember he had THOUSANDS. They were being sold in lots of 12, 50, 100, and 200 IIRC.

Of course, maybe ahron11 doesn't have the same ones but that would be one hell of a coincidence.

They do work extremely well in coilguns. They appear to be kinda old but seem like quality inverter caps to me.

EDIT: oh and BTW i like the last sentence in the product description arcstarter linked to.
