ok, so I have this shock sensor I was using in my high speed photo V3 setup, and I found out after trying it that it has a serious delay... I do not know anything about the unit other than how to use it, as it was from a local surplus store... does anyone here know of some unit that does not have a large delay? the max allowed is just a couple milliseconds, and that is for my "slower" events...

By shock I assume you mean impact. There are a number of MEMS sensors available for sample from Analog Devices (basically mini gyroscopes and inertia sensors) that ought to be able to do what you want. The only trouble with them is they aren't in particularly easy to use packages for us amateurs. Most of them are Ball Grid Array or something similar.

it seems that one of their single axis sensors is perfect, and at only 7.95... I could pick up a visa gift card and get one soon... thank you

Try a piezoelectric speaker or something similar. You can tune it by gluing things to it, mounting it in different ways or use a filter on the output. How well it will work depens on how you define "shock".

If you want an instantaneous response from an impact use a micro-switch (like the clicky pushbuttons from electronics). They stand up to considerable abuse and they are easy to find.

by shock, I mean am impact or force that does not need to be directly applied to the sensor... (e.g., it needs to be able to sense a baseball hitting a bat from the other end of the bat)... a piezo might work, but probably would be too sensitive...

The speed of sound in a baseball bat is finite, a few Km/s depending on the material. You might not be able to get the picture you want without sensing the impact near where it takes place.

If you drive an optocoupler directly from the piezoelectric element it is not going to be very sensitive and you can always add a resistor.

that seems like a good idea... main reason I just dont use a resistor is the very fine line between sensitive and defunct... thank you!
