Frequency inverter running 3 MOTs?

I talked this over with a colleague and we are not sure if it will work, as we have no spare frequency inverter we would risk to loose, so until we find one, here is what we have thought about.

Instead of using a variac to adjust the voltage on 3 MOTs, we could wire them as a motor in star connection, 400V supply to 230V MOTs, and run them through a 3 phased frequency inverter, and having the secondaries in series we could have a 0-6000 volt power supply.

But will 3 transformers despite their similarities to a 3phased motor be able to be driven this way?

With the secondaries in series or parallel the output will be nearly zero. You'd need to rectify it with a 3 phase bridge and use the output as DC.

Ah yes, forgot about the phase angles, so with a 3 phase bridge rectifier output is limited to around 2800 volts with secondaries in star connection.

seems a variac with a single mot is just a better solution when we cant hit 6kV.

At most a 3-phase inverter will usually let you set the output voltage about 10% more than the input voltage. Since MOTs are already on the brink of saturation you'd probably want to increase the operating frequency slightly too.

It might make a decent HVDC supply if you already have the 3-phase inverter and 3 identical MOTs handy, but not worth the effort if you haven't.
