While doing some experiments as a head start to building a working coil gun, I noticed that a long rod (tiny allen key) feels a much greater force from a magnetic field than a steel bb. Now I'm thinking this could be because of the difference in how much material there is, but does any one know exactly how a magnetic field effects the establishment of N/S poles in a spherical object?
Also I am wondering if a coilgun could be made more efficient by 'pre-magnetizing' a projectile before it is inserted into the field, even a weak magnetic field seems to have given an allen key a profound amount of magnetic strength.

When winding multilayered coils, doesnt winding one way and then winding in the reverse direction effectively weaken the over all magnetic field because of the opposing direction of the fields?

No, because the current still runs in the same direction. It would be the same if you just wound many single turn layers. The magnetic field runs around the wire in the same direction no matter what. Now, if in the middle of the winding, you stopped and held the wire in place and wound backwards (without the rest unwinding) then you might get some decrease in efficiency. I hope I answered what you were asking.

Ah ok so the current still runs clockwise/counterclockwise, i've been thinking horizontal direction according to the right hand rule for solenoids,... which only works for a single type of solenoid.

Ok another question, I'm using the powersupply for a cold cathode lamp connected through some diodes to give VCC and the output is at around 500 volts. Is it safe to assume that since cold cathode lamps use low current, I think any ways, that if I connect the 500v output to a 200v capacitor through some resistors, that the voltage drop will be enough to keep the capacitors relatively safe?
