two things: one, the safety resistor goes parallel to the main high energy caps directly (one on each cap between the positive and negative terminals, so none of the other circuitry is involved, so it wont affect it while it remains dormant, and the caps are discharged)

two: if you want to use a CW multiplier make sure you limit the number of stages you have, in this case I would THINK that lower voltage and higher values would be better, but it takes a balance because they have to charge before they can charge the main caps, and if it takes too long the main caps could lose their charge from the resistor (easy to overcome, but takes a little planning... that is why you use a relatively high value for the safety resistor, so the charge diminishes slower, giving more time to the CW caps... also, the more stages, the lower the current and higher the voltage... and depending on your power source you build the CW

also, the CW caps aren't a hazard enough to need the resistor (and it likely would not work with one, and they are too small to make the current go through your heart... so it hurts, but hazard is very small especially since the CW cap's values are very low)...
when you settle on a power source I can help you design one... but you might not even need one!

Thank you so much. I really would not be able to do this without your help.

Right now my power source is a 12 V battery (from a RC car or airsoft gun) plugged into a 12VDC-120VAC inverter.

Ultimately I would like my cap bank to be at 800V but for now I am going to start with 400V to get the hang of that before I move to a setup with a higher potential of killing me (pun).

I don't know if that battery will suffice, but it might (if so, barely)
do you plan to just use a CW directly on the 120AC generated by the inverter, or have another form of supply?
what are the ratings on the inverter?

I was just going to use the guts from one of these:

Link2

And it looks like its 115VAC instead of 120. I was planning on plugging this straight into the CW. I don't know what else to do between those 2 stages.

The exact specs on the one I have are as follows:

Input: 12 V DC
Output: 115 V AC, 60Hz, 60W cont
75W for 5 minutes

Thanks

that should work... the formulas are very simple... what charging voltage do you plan to use?

I'm not sure exactly what charging voltage is, but I would like my capacitor to be at 400V. Then later, once I get the hang of this, I will try 800V (400's in series).
