They where living in a door that I was disassembaling for scrap metal. I felt bad and purchased an ant farm for them to live in. I can only assome that the colony is only a year old(they had around 25-50 workers). I have saved the queen, brood and a few workers that did not run away. I had them for a week now and learned that the gel ant farms are not suitable for a full colony. I assome the gel has no protein and they where showing that they where very hungry when I feed them some insects for the first time. The gel ant farms are only toys for oberving worker ants. Has anyone here had ants as pets and have any advice on taking care of them? How to setup a good habitat for them? Diet? What species could they be?
The queen had layed a few dozen eggs since I had her. Some of the larva had since pupate.

Awww, thats soo cool! I've always wanted an ant farm w/ a queen, but It'd be really hard to clean out and such.
What I would use is a large see-through container filled with topsoil. To see the tunnels, just wrap some black material around the outside, so they will burrow all the way to the wall. They look like black ants, general omnivores. I would put a hardy plant in their container, then add aphids in. The ants will probably feed off the aphids, I see whole "herds" of aphids being guarded by black ants all the time.

I have found out on another forum that they are black carpenter ants which are the Camponotus pennsylvanicus species. These ants do feed on aphids but finding aphids will be difficult.

You can find one during the spring/summer during their swarms. Only pick up a queen that has already sheds her wings. This means she has already mated during flight. Now she is looking for a place to start a new colony. Put her in a moist/humid habitat and she will start laying eggs in a few weeks.
