My current "project" is making a shear thickening fluid like that intended as an additive to Kevlar.
Has anyone else done this? How did it work for you? What did you use?

I'm going to be using silica fume (cab-o-sil, according to the interwebs, most particles are between 300-400nm) and ethylene glycol or polyethylene glycol.

I got my cabosil today, and it's pretty interesting on it's own. It weighs almost nothing, and dries out my skin. It gets somewhat clumpy in moist air. I don't have any EG or PEG yet so I tried a small amount of it it with vegetable oil, and it doesn't work. I didn't really expect it to though.

The following is probably the best resource on STF body armor. Nothing else has any real content on the subject, just news articles about "liquid body armor" etc.

What about good old cornflour? Doesn't sound very cool though but how does the shear strength compare?

I remember doing that cornflour or starch thing.
It was fun for a while. I'll have to do some sort of subjective comparison, because I have no idea how I would objectively compare them.

I know the orange stuff ''d3o'' to be in use for years. For use in amour it is stabilized somehow into a solid, but otherwise it is actually a very slowly flowing liquid as well.
