...was a bit bigger than expected:

New Pig Thumb
(pictured: Yours truly with new pig, freshly arrived)

Picked this up on eBay a few weeks ago because I'd never seen a 34.5kV delta-connected pig before (no, this is *not* a 19900/34500Y transformer!) The seller, Belyea Power (belyeapower) is a Pennsylvania-based supplier of transformers and other HV distribution gear. They're a major operation, but their eBay presence is very small (they're probably just testing the waters). Still, they're worth keeping an eye on! The ridiculous transformer above was $300, and is *brand new*. Of course, freight to the other side of the country more than doubled the price, but that's what tax returns are for wink The guy I worked with there, Jim, walked me through the whole freight process and was totally awesome.

I'm not sure what'll I'll use this behemoth for yet. It's a bit too HV for the size of Tesla coil I'm usually building, but maybe that's just motivation wink With the no-load tap changer set to the maximum +5%, this sucker puts out 36.2kV!!

Cheers,
Aaron, N7OE

Oh my lord! That hing is a MONSTER! Wow, how many watts? I can only imagine what kind of sparks you can get with that thing... Especially if it where connected to a tesla coil! That would be one heck of a capacitor if it where being used as a tesla coil though...

Heheh... only 10kVA! Same as yours, IIRC. The large size is due to the increased clearances within the can and the very large-windowed core required for the uncommonly high voltage. The impulse rating is 200kV!

At 7200V (the distribution voltage used where I live), I expect the same sized can would hold a 75kVA transformer no problem. It's plain to see where the increased transformer cost at higher distribution voltages comes from, isn't it!

Cheers,
Aaron, N7OE

WOW that is amazing amazed . My pig has a impulse rating of 140kv i think. Also btw how do i find what the distribution voltage in a my neighborhood? I have always been curious of what is running through the wires on the side of my house smile.

10 KVA is surprising, but yeah it makes sense because of the high voltage. Wow, though! What does it weigh? You could almost fit inside that can yourself!

So what do you have planned for it?

BTW teslacoolguy I was wondering the same thing, about the distribution voltage, so I got my dads video camera and zoomed in on the sticker on the pig in front of my house (actually on a pole for a change), and the primary is 7200V.

Yea i guess that works as far as finding the primary voltage. My cam has 10x zoom so ill see if i can read the sticker with it tomorrow.

It's weighs 675 lbs. Funny, I was thinking the same thing (about fitting inside) cheesey

Pole pigs are pretty common where I live, but in the newer housing developments they use the pad-mounted "green box" transformers instead. The nameplates are often on the outside, so I just walk up and look wink
