Hi guys, I’ve just discovered these beautiful top-loads in a chain of shops specialized for hardware and garden stuff. They are stainless, light and really well made - sold as a “decoration balls†in different sizes. As decoration they are probably not very successful because there was huge discount on them. The price for the big ball (33cm) was only 9$... So in case there is a BAUMAX shop in your vicinity go and give a try…

That's so weird, I just bought something like this yesterday at a local garden supply store. It's 8 inch, not sure if its aluminum or steel. Cost me 30 bucks tho, but it was worth it.
It was called a "Gazing Ball" and originally had a mirror finish green coating. The coating was incredibly tough; an hour of sanding only took off a few square inches. I ended up melting it off with a propane torch.
It makes a great SSTC topload, and they had far larger ones available, as Mates already said perfect for a large VDG.

These are rare in Australia. I found these 10 and 12 inch balls in our local nursery which had been floating in an ornamental pool for a few years unsold. One of them even had water inside but no sign of even a tiny hole. Still cost over AU$100. There were larger ones made into water feature displays for a lot more. Setup here in a Franklin's Bells arrangement with a 4 inch spark.
