TV20 Hi Voltage diode

Hello ,

I was reading a couple of threads on seriesing 1N4007 to get the required PIC for high voltage aplications.
I found this diode commonly available where I stay. The point is why series, when diodes lihe these are alvbl for quite cheap rates ?
The idea is not to knock anyone , but are there any late gotchas associated with this diode ?
I am attaching the DS in case anyone needs.

As you can see from the forward voltage on the data sheet, these HV diodes are also made internally from a series stack of junctions. It's the continuous dissipation permissible from the package that limits the max forward current to the mA region.

This type of diode, or the Phillps BY841x series at similar ratings, is far easier to use and more reliable than a string of 1N4007s, IF it can handle the current. Given that the pulse rating is very much higher than the continuous, it should be possible to operate I<sup>2</sup>t limited intermittently.

Paralleling several HV diodes to increase the current is not going to work, as they don't share nice, without lossy balancing resistors in series with each one. OTOH, sufficient derating and their nice failure mode does allow seriesing diodes to share voltage (just) without extra components.

30 amps peak verse 500 ma peak I think I will go with 30 amps.
