I want to measure the RPM of my 3 phase generator. There are 56 alternating magnets (28 pairs) and 42 coils (14 magnets per phase). The generator is in a Star (Y) configuration. I connected my multimeter with a frequency function to one phase and the common star connection. I was guessing that for one revolution/sec (1 Hz) I would see 28 Hz on the meter. However, when I have the generator moving at 1 rev/sec I see about 130 Hz on the meter. Now I have not connected an oscilloscope up to the waveform to see what is happening. Are my calculations off or is the meter counting noise?
EDIT: I seemed to get the right number, 28, by making my frequency measurement between two phases instead of between one phase and the common.

i did something a bit similar using a stepper motor as a generator. 50Hz was 1 RPS
