Since seeing pictures of Terry Blake's oil-immersed secondary years ago, I wanted to make one. But, not wanting to be a total copycat, I decided to build mine in a 400-lb insulator:
Cap Thumb

It has big hexagonal aluminum end caps on the top and bottom, however. Recent science here and on TCML suggests that the bottom cap, being made of a material that doesn't induction-heat very well, ought to act more to increase coupling through reflection that it should to waste power. However, the top cap is a problem. It's jagged and ugly and hence wouldn't make a very good mounting point for an ordinary topload. Yet taking it off seems really hard!

So, I decided to accomodate it instead. Rather than mount a toroid on top, I'd mount a toroid around it!

It started as an ordinary 6x24" OW Landergren spun toroid gotten from D. C. Cox:
Before Thumb

Then, a terrible thing happened! I began cutting it apart:
Cutting Thumb

And cutting, and cutting, until I could wear it like a hat! Well, almost:
Aaron As Secondary Thumb

Naturally, the large terminal plate on the top end cap will be removed when I do this for real, however here's a shot of what it will sort of look like when it's all together:
Cap With Toroid Thumb

Modeling done by Terry Fritz and others suggests that the inner surface of the toroid plays little to no roll in preventing breakout, so I expect good things from this setup. Note that, while the toroid looks a little small on the insulator, the secondary within is much, much smaller. Only 6" in diameter. But if I need more topload, I'll put a 5x30" toroid on top of this one. Should look even cooler then wink

Cheers,
Aaron, N7OE
