Hello everyone,
Don't write here much but I watch the forums a lot. I just had a quick question what is the point when wiring capacitors in series could become potentially damaging to the capacitors? For instance I have some 525V electrocyllic capacitors that I ahve left over from my railgun and was wondering what is the highest voltage obtainable without damage from arcing.

The problem wihseries connection, especially electrolytics, is that when they get charged/discharged discharged, in practice one will often charge or discharge at a different rate to the other, due to tolerances etc. If this happens, it can result in one of the caps seeing reverse polarity, potentially causing damage.
In some situations, this can be avoided with resistors or diodes.
If the caps are identical you will often get away with it, and anyway the caps are probably going to die from overcurrent before any reverse-polarity issues start damaging them!

Electrolytic capacitors in series should have resistors across each one that is sized to pull at least 10x the specified leakage current of the individual capacitor as general rule.
