Was looking at a way to dress up my Minibrute with some internal LED's in the enclosure, when I saw this stuff.

Seems it needs high voltage at a high frequency to operate.
This got me to thinking. . .
Would I even need to hook up drive electronics to get it to work?
Might it not even just light up when the Coil operates as neon lights will?

Seems I will purchase some, because I found it cheap at the Goldmine.

If it works, then what a cool way to illuminate the Coil, if not, I bet it would look cool with Lego's.
Either way, at that price I can't resist.

Very interesting. I wonder if it will light just in the presence of the electrical field.

Actually, if you go to NeonString.com, they sell it for $1.40 per foot which is pretty cheap.

You will not be able to get the stuff to light up by just wrapping the coil with it, because it will draw too much current. A 1ft piece of that stuf will draw the better portion of a milliamp at 25khz. You might be able to get it to do domething by adding a little antenna to the inner conductor and grounding the core, but I think it would be a heck of a lot easier to just hook it up to a real driver.

I wasn't going to wrap it around the coil, I was actually Going to illuminate the Control Enclosure.
Instead of gray PVC, I used opaque cutting boards for the top cover and primary supports. I was going to illuminate the enclosure from inside to give it an nice warm glow, and I've experimented with LED's and they do a pretty good job of it. But the EL wire seems like it might be brighter and I figure as long as I don' t have a complete circle, it's shouldn't screw anything up. I will get some drive electronics for it because I would like to also make some Lego sculptures and to illuminate some Warhammer 40K models I have, but like I said, I will experiment with it.

I was just wondering if anyone has tried to use it near an operating coil before to see if it would light up without control electronics.

I know Derek Woodroffe used it around the base of his coil, but I think he needed an inverter to make it glow. I don't know how often he checks the forum, you could try sending him a mail.

Did a search in the members list and can't seem to find a Derek Woodroffe.
