Hi i am now trying to make a ballast for a pole pig that i recently optained and i have couple ideas for a ballast so here is what i came up with.
1. wind a multipayer coil of approxamately 160 turns of 10g wire around some pvc and make a iron core consisting of a bunch of 1/4 steel rods tied together and vary the ballasting by moving the core in and out.
2. cut a mot open and remove the secondary and rewind it with 12g wire.
3. take a mot and short the secondary via another mot's secondary to limit the current somewhat.

MOTs work well if you have enough of them. With a shorted secondary, each one will ballast about 2.5-3 kVA, and could sustain that for maybe 30s-60s before a cooldown is needed. For longer runtimes, you could put them under oil, or even water, given the voltage is relatively low.
If you can get an arc welder, that's way nicer, it gives you a variable inductance via the current control, and of course you can also use it for it's intended purpose . It's also much more powerful, my 225A arc welder can pull 16kVA at maximum power. I paid $200 for it used.
