Hi all im wanting to make a capacitor bank im aiming for around 5kj - 10kj. Im wanting to make it modular so i can gang them to make a bigger bank as i need. I have several 450v 47uf capacitors. But i was thinking would it be better getting some 400v 100uf caps. And im unsure as to what i should be aiming for and as to how i should be assembling it ie resistors and bleeders serial or parallel? and suggestions or links would be really helpfull as i can rearly get on the net to research

5kj bank from 450v 47uf caps?
each 450v 47uf is like 4 or 5 Js, that means you need a thousand of them.
good luck

hmm i see. What should i be looking for in a capacitor? should it be the volts or the uf? and does 5kj seem overkill for a small railgun project?

I used around 37 joules for a coilgun that can shoot a large nail across a distance of arounf 2-3 yards. 100 joules is a more realistic goal.

The energy stored in a capcitor is given by E = 0.5*C*V^2. 5kJ is lots for your first project, something like 0.5kJ would be more suitable. Have you seen this yet?
