Hi All,

Thought I would share the latest thing I have been working on. I bought 2.5 kg of Bismuth off Ebay and some Neodymium magnets. I melted the Bismuth in the bottom of 2 coke cans using my stove to get 2 solid blocks, placed a magnet between them and a large magnet above them. Its just roughly set up at the moment to test, would be nice to get into a nice presentable setup when I have some time. Here is a video of it working.

Good stuff there Niel, the effect is also know as diamagnetic levitation.

Here's one i made a few years ago using LEGO;

When I was making my rigs, I found there was a relationship between the height of the bismuth and the height of the flaoting magnet. 5 x height of bismuth to 1 x height of magnet ratio gives a pretty good airgap, with the right height & distance of the lift magnet.

It is possible to make a diamagnetic levitation rig using bismuth blocks slighty wider than the float magnet, so that you get a good visual effect.

p.s. my first attemps were also with alu cans, but they've got a plastic coating that burns as the bismuth melts... it is possible to use a cone shaped object to make a plaster mould for pouring the bismuth, or as I've show on my webpage, a simple mould of alu U channel works well too

Pyrolytic graphite works well, and is a lot lighter. I've been wondering what would happen if you made layers of Bi separated by graphite, but haven't got around to testing it- you'd think the diamagnetic effect would be magnified somewhat... free floating "hover magnet" anyone?

stop4stuff, that was actually one of the youtube videos I watched that inspired me to make it, what a small world to find the person who made it in here. You have a great setup.
I too found the coke can burns all the plastic inside, what iI did to avoid it is sitting it on the stove with nothing in it on full heat for about 10 minutes, theres a lot of smoke that comes out and I had my stove exhaust fan cranking so my smoke alarm in my house wouldnt go off but it got to a point it would not burn anymore and it was fine when the bismuth went in. The can being so thin makes it so easy to tear open to get the bismuth at the end.
Have also seen videos of that graphite you mentioned conundrum, will have to buy myself some of that from ebay, it looks very interesting.

I can save you some time as I have some here along with the magnets it levitates on.
PM me your address.

Here is my diamagnetic contribution. I also did some measurements that show that the "lift" is about 2.2% of the magnet weight.
