Hi all.

I have two of these beasties, both JVC 42" plasmas made at about the same time.

Unfortunately, one has a burned out PDP (has big black line on the screen about 1/3 the way across and halfway down the screen) and the other has an apparently fried controller board but the PDP looks fine.

I've got as far as determining that the base boards are not mechanically compatible but they do use the same PDP, with essentially the same pinout and specifications.

I can't seem to work out how to separate the PDP and uber-fragile flexi cables with embedded LSI HV chips from the base plate, undid about 24 screws and no go :(

Has anyone even attempted such a mammoth task? It seems feasible (the LCD I modded is easy by comparison)

Thanks in advance.

Unlike LCD panels which you can take apart,
PDP's cable enters the glass panel which cannot be taken apart,
at least without damaging the PDP, but i have had no experiance in
trying to dismantle the PDP panel as when one goes faulty i just replace the panel.
On the PDP that has the 'black bar fault'
you may have a resistor gone open circuit on a buffer board,
thus a supply missing at the nearest buffer ic.
If you're lucky, that resistor may just have gone open for no apparent reason,
but on the other hand it might reveal a short circuit buffer drive ic.

Update:- it looks like the buffer IC itself, there's no output at all apart from coloured lines. There's also some corrosion on the PCBs which I only found on close inspection :(

The intereting problem seems to be on *2. It has 23V where there whould be about 175V, on the big long PCB where there are two flexi-connectors to the scaler boards (H out), one of which came detached from the PCB. I believe that these are absolutely critical as they supply the drives to the plasma panel, without which there is no picture.

When I unhook the plasma drive from the mainboard the set comes on and stays on, with no picture (on *1 it came on with lines on the screen) so this may be the problem.

Thanks in advance...

Update:- Plasma TV now works fine after the 74HC244 was replaced on the drive board, and PDP was indeed compatible as the back plate was held on with thermal compound. Edge-of-the-seat stuff though but well worth it.

I still have my doubts that a single lightning bolt can have weakened the chip so much that it blew - these things are designed to last the lifetime of the panel and really should not ever blow under normal conditions.

Still have the other three (good) chips so I might do some experimenting as they are able to drive the panel at high frequency +/- 200V (perhaps use them for some sort of bargraph-like structure with EL wire?)
